The Rode NTG4 Shotgun Microphone with Digital Switches is designed for ENG, filmmaking, field recording, sound design, and broadcast applications. The microphone builds upon the success of the company’s NTG1 and NTG2 microphones with an updated capsule to deliver broadcast quality sound and digital switching options for versatile field operation.

Designed to be mounted on a boom, a handheld pistol grip, or atop a compact camera for run and gun style filmmaking, the microphone features a super-cardioid directional pickup pattern, a frequency range of 20 to 20,000 Hz, a sensitivity of -32 dB re 1 V/Pa, a dynamic range of 119 dB, a signal to noise-ratio of 78 dB SPL, and a maximum SPL of 135 dB from 48V, 24V, or12V phantom power (4.5 mA current draw).

Along the body of the microphone is a power button with LED indicator as well as three digital switching buttons with LED indicators.

The first button provides a -10 dB pad on the input of the microphone to allow the recording of loud sounds without clipping.

The middle button turns on a 75 Hz high pass filter which is useful for reducing low frequency and infrasonic rumble from HVAC systems indoors or street traffic outdoors from over-powering the recording.

The third button is a high frequency boost. The value of the high frequency boost is in restoring some of the high frequency content that is often lost when a blimp or furry windshield is placed over the microphone. An added benefit is that the high frequency boost switch can help improve the intelligibility of recorded speech, especially useful for filmmaking and broadcast applications.

The microphone comes with an RM5 microphone clip, a foam windshield and a carrying pouch.

The NTG4’s elevated sensitivity allows it to produce strong output levels without having to apply extreme gain at your mic preamp. A switchable treble boost is on hand for situations where additional clarity is needed.

Quality Sound Capture

The combination of the NTG4’s 8.9″ long body and super-cardioid polar pattern yields focused front-facing directionality and enhanced attenuation of sound entering from the sides. Its low self-noise of 16 dBA and sensitive condenser element communicate detailed audio unburdened by the hiss that plagues many low-cost microphones. Plus, its balanced output allows longer cable runs than most camera-mount shotgun microphones.

Phantom Powered

Thanks to its 3-pin XLR output and compliance with 12, 24, or 48 VDC phantom power, the NTG4 is compatible with a variety of handheld audio recorders, field recorders, and mixers adapters as well as built-in preamps on many camcorders and cinema cameras.

Customizable Tone via Digital Switching

Digital switching not only allows for intuitive access to the NTG4’s settings, but it also retains their states when the mic is switched off. Activate the 75 Hz low-cut filter to reduce low-frequency noise from common sources such as air conditioners and traffic. Use the +6 dB treble boost for enhanced clarity and intelligibility (best for environments with minimal high-frequency ambient noise). When loud sound sources threaten to distort your recording, switch on the -10 dB pad to attenuate the input level.

Ideal for Boompole Mounting

The lightweight, metal-bodied NTG4 includes a mic clip for easy placement on a mic stand or boom pole. Alternatively, mount the NTG4 in the Rode SM4-R shock mount or Rode PG2-R pistol grip (both available separately) to impede the transfer of vibrations in boom pole or handheld applications.

Windscreen Minimizes Wind Noise

The NTG4 has a foam windscreen to reduce unwanted wind noise from breezes, fans, heaters, and air conditioners. For maximum reduction of handling noise and wind noise in indoor or outdoor environments, consider the Rode Blimp furry windshield and shock-mount suspension system (available separately).
